Synex semi-rolling: KDE Plasma edition available

This new distribution line, based on Debian Forky (testing), is designed for users seeking access to newer versions of the desktop environment, the kernel, and the system stack, without giving up the experience and tools that characterize Synex.

We are pleased to announce the availability of the first semi-rolling edition of Synex, which follows the Debian testing repositories and receives continuous updates with the latest software versions available in the Debian ecosystem. The first available edition is KDE Plasma, with GNOME and XFCE in preparation.

What’s included

The image includes the same set of Synex tools present in the stable edition: synex-center, synex-cleaner, synex-firmware-helper, synex-lvm-setup, and full ZFS support via DKMS, including installation on ZFS from Calamares. The installer is the same Calamares 3.4.2 with Synex’s own configuration (calamares-settings-synex 1.0.22), including the optional application selector via netinstall.

Key components in this edition include: kernel 6.19.11, KDE Plasma 6.5.4 with KDE Apps 25.12, Mesa 26.0.4, PipeWire 1.6.3, systemd 260, OpenSSL 3.6.1, ZFS 2.4.1, SDDM 0.21, and Firefox ESR 140.9. System firmware corresponds to the March 2026 revision.

Considerations

Being based on Debian testing, this edition receives packages that have not yet gone through the full stabilization cycle of Debian stable. This allows access to more recent software, but implies that changes or adjustments between updates may occasionally occur. For environments where stability is a priority, the stable edition based on Debian Trixie remains the recommended option.

Availability

The Synex semi-rolling KDE Plasma ISO image is available for immediate download from SourceForge. GNOME and XFCE editions will be published soon.
