Synex: Focus on what really matters

When we decided to create Synex, we had a clear vision: to build a GNU/Linux distribution that put simplicity and stability front and center, without sacrificing power or flexibility. We wanted to offer an operating system that would be as useful for a small business looking for reliable infrastructure as for an individual user who simply wants to work without unnecessary distractions. Today, we are proud to present the result of that effort.

Built on solid foundations

Synex is born on the robust foundation of Debian Stable, developed with the official Debian Live Build tool. This decision is not coincidental: Debian represents decades of experience, a community committed to technical excellence, and a mature and proven software ecosystem. By building on this foundation, we guarantee that every Synex installation inherits that reliability that characterizes professional systems.

Our minimalist approach is reflected from the first boot. Unlike other distributions that saturate the system with pre-installed applications, Synex includes only the essentials: base system tools, a polished desktop environment, and the fundamental elements so you can start working immediately. Need an office suite? A specific media player? The choice is yours. We believe that each user knows their own needs best, and our job is to provide the perfect platform for you to build your ideal system.

Four flavors, one philosophy

Synex is available in four editions, each optimized for different use cases and preferences:

  • Synex KDE: Power and productivity with KDE Plasma, ideal for users looking for a modern, customizable desktop full of advanced features.
  • Synex GNOME: Elegance and simplicity with GNOME, perfect for those who value a clean and consistent interface.
  • Synex XFCE: The perfect balance between lightness and functionality, designed for maximum productivity without compromising performance.
  • Synex LXDE: Optimized for resource-limited equipment, proving that a lightweight system doesn’t have to be limited.

All editions share the same solid core and receive the same level of attention and development. The choice of desktop environment is just that: an aesthetic and workflow choice, not a compromise in quality or features.

Installation without complications

We implement Calamares as our installer, guaranteeing an intuitive and professional installation process. With full support for BIOS and UEFI systems, Synex adapts to both modern hardware and older equipment. The installation process is straightforward: you select your language, time zone, keyboard layout, partition configuration, and in minutes you have a functional system ready to customize according to your needs.

Complete and extensible ecosystem

Synex is not just a base system. We have carefully integrated technologies and repositories that significantly expand the system’s capabilities:

Complete multimedia support

Although we don’t pre-install specific media players or editors, Synex includes all necessary codecs from the first boot. This means that any multimedia application you choose to install will work without additional problems: FFmpeg, GStreamer, FLAC and Vorbis audio codecs, hardware acceleration with Mesa, and full support for popular formats are ready and waiting.

Flatpak: your gateway to thousands of applications

We integrate native support for Flatpak, opening the doors to a vast ecosystem of modern, sandboxed, and always updated applications. From the Discover software manager (in KDE) or Software (in GNOME), you can access thousands of applications with a single click, without worrying about dependencies or compatibility.

Carefully selected additional repositories

Synex includes additional repositories for business and productive software that many users need:

  • Synex Repository: where we host our selection of packages, as well as software packaged by our team.
  • Microsoft Edge and Visual Studio Code: For developers and users who prefer Microsoft tools.
  • OnlyOffice: A complete, professional office suite compatible with Microsoft Office formats.
  • Zabbix: For professional infrastructure monitoring.

Synex tools: our own development to improve your experience

One of the aspects that distinguishes us is our commitment to developing our own tools that solve real problems for our users. We don’t limit ourselves to packaging existing software; we create solutions when we detect specific needs:

synex-nvidia-helper

Installing NVIDIA drivers can be a headache on Linux. Our official NVIDIA driver installation assistant completely simplifies this process, with support for both X11 and Wayland. You install the package, run the assistant, and in minutes you have the latest official drivers working correctly, regardless of your graphics environment.

synex-virt-setup

Need to work with virtual machines? This metapackage sets up a complete virtualization environment based on virt-manager and all its necessary components. A single installation, and you have QEMU/KVM, libvirt, and all the tools needed to manage your virtualized infrastructure.

synex-fonts-config

We ported and adapted the font configuration from openSUSE, known for its excellent text rendering. This tool significantly improves the readability and appearance of fonts in Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Brave, Chrome), providing a more consistent and pleasant visual experience across the web.

MX Package Installer

We integrate the popular MX Package Installer, ported and adapted for Synex. This tool greatly facilitates the installation of common packages, popular applications, and system utilities, with an intuitive interface that makes software management accessible to users of all levels.

Community recognition

We are deeply grateful and honored that Synex has been accepted on DistroWatch, one of the most respected Linux distribution directories. This recognition validates our work and motivates us to continue improving. For us, appearing on DistroWatch is not just a technical milestone; it’s a confirmation that we are building something that the Linux community values and needs.

The future of Synex

Our work doesn’t end here. We are actively developing the Synex Server version, which will be available soon.

Without revealing too much yet, we can advance that we are working on our own development that will allow users and system administrators to perform implementation and deployment tasks with great ease, order, and automation. We are focused on being able to take the experience of technical or more advanced users, but also users with less technical profiles, to a new level of simplicity and efficiency.

Welcome to Synex.
