Synex Semi-rolling adds COSMIC 1.1.0, System76’s next-generation desktop
Synex brings COSMIC to its Semi-rolling branch with version 1.1.0, the latest release of the Rust-based desktop developed by System76. The edition is built on Debian testing and comes with a public repository containing the entire packaging work, reaffirming Synex’s commitment to transparency and reproducible work.
Synex Semi-rolling: new images with updated base
The new Synex semi-rolling images update the system base with the latest versions of the kernel, desktop environments, and main components, and incorporate minor corrections to the synex-testing-release package.
Synex Server 13 R6: maintenance update and work in progress
Synex Server 13 R6 is a maintenance update that incorporates the latest Debian Trixie package updates, along with minor revisions to synex-installer and synex-repo-manager. This note also previews some of the lines of work we are defining for upcoming versions.
Synex 13 COSMIC: a new desktop edition based on COSMIC Epoch
We have added a new desktop edition based on COSMIC, the desktop environment developed by System76 and written entirely in Rust. This edition is built on the same stable Synex 13 base as the rest of the flavours, and includes the complete set of the project’s own tools. As part of this work, we also publish a GitHub repository with the scripts and patches needed to compile COSMIC and generate the deb packages on Debian 13 or any derivative distribution.
Synex COSMIC now available as a development release

Synex Semi-rolling: new testing image with Synex Package Manager 1.1.1 and renewed system identity
The new Synex testing images update the system base, include Synex Package Manager 1.1.1 with held package management, importable/exportable software lists, and a new virtualized results table, and extend to the semi-rolling branch the system identity renewal through dpkg-divert already present in Synex 13 stable.
Synex 13 Openbox: a lightweight, fast desktop without compromising the Synex identity
The Openbox edition of Synex 13 brings a minimalist, fast desktop environment built on Openbox, tint2, and jgmenu, designed for modest or older hardware and for users who prefer direct control over their system. Despite its lightweight approach, it preserves the Synex visual identity across every toolkit and full access to the distribution’s ecosystem.
Synex 13 u9: Synex Package Manager as the unified software manager
Synex 13 u9 establishes Synex Package Manager as the central software management tool in Synex Desktop, replacing the traditional PackageKit-based stack (Discover, GNOME Software) and MX Package Installer. This update unifies package, repository, and Flatpak management into a single tool common to five of the six desktop editions, and incorporates system identity through dpkg-divert, Synex’s own KDE theme, and revisions to the default software catalog.
